We love to judge others. Prepare our special dyes and cast people in their respective and appropriate moulds. Any individual that does not subscribe to our dyes are perpetual offenders. And the sculptures that waver a bit from its original mould are branded warped.
An appropriate widow has to shun bright colours. Dance and music are for the young. Sex is a taboo. Displays of conjugal behaviours are disapproved. The old have past their age to have fun and the young have to be reigned in.
There is this immense scrambling to snuff out anything that spells fulfillment. We thrive in seeing people struggle.
Is being intelligent and having the power to think being suitably used? Isn’t the fungus that’s growing on our mind-set becoming deadlier?
When will we unlearn to cast the first stone? When will we accept people who are different with contrary ideas from ours? When will we acknowledge that someone else might be right? When will we stop calling people “freaks”?
Most importantly…when will non-english speakers intelligence not be judged? The snobbery that I see around me sometimes stifles!

I like calling people freaks :( Its my fav endearment actually :(( Once I've thrown the freak label on someone, they can be reassured that I like them. Its only when someone yells "FREAK!!" at me in frustration, do I feel reassured that they now understand me.
So I can't call people freaks any more or what? :((
That's so freaking unfair, you Freak!!

Bunty,
Is it more about snobbery or about Hindi? IMO, snobbery and cynicism is everywhere. It is not just from the english-speaking Indians. English is a world language. When I was doing the south-India study tour, we had to speak only in english, wid the natives. When in U.P, it was only Hindi.
What a blog!
One of my roomies was from Lucknow and her Hindi sounded really beautiful n polite. I have not met too many who can speak Hindi so nicely.....in fact, I'd rather *not* hear badly-spoken Hindi!
For me, Hindi is just another language - English is a global language, Marathi is my mother-tongue. Sanskrit shud be the unified language of India. Right?
And it is strange, but the 'non-english speakers' who get laughed at by the english-speaking ppl, are the ones who usually pick up a foreign accent very quickly compared to the english-speaking Indians! I have observed dat....
I think u wanted to say more in dis blog, but have withheld dat.....?
My 2 c for this cryptic blog!

When I was in college the maharashtrian office folks used to sneer at us - the gang - from UP, Bihar, MP and WB etc... accusing of .. well... stuff... and such low regard for Hindi, the national language that can make the fathers of the nation, the ones who took pride in concepts like, 'Unity in diversity' well... they will shift uncomfortably in their grave!
Not just tht - I remember reading one of the known bloggers on this site, quoting quite self self-effacingly, 'I will NOT speak in Hindi..' or something like that..
Well.. despising anything, anyone - because of the language they choose to speak in, well, shows what a low self esteem such people carry. period.

Dear Bunty,
You certainly made us think with this one. What is surprising is that "Only he who is without sin, let him cast the first stone". We cooly seem to have forgotten this advice from the Great Teacher and go ahead and cast stones on personal whims and fancies.

Muthu Da,
Maine aisa to nahin kahan...lol!
Infact I have written in one of my responses that I love the language. I do not judge a persons capabilities depending on his command of the queens language. And like Latita pointed out...the very act of putting down others to feel superior is in bad taste in my opinion.

Bunty Hi!
Whatzzzz the matter ?? Does all this really bother you that much.
Okay, promise henceforth I"ll only cast the second stone, if that's okay with you. Otherwise the third.
God bless,

hey bunty! I think you just used english-speakers as an example. In general, any kind of snobbery/superiority/"I am better than you" attitude is irritating. But seems to be unavoidable in human interactions. Not justifying it - just an observation that as long as our egos are involved, and we get (false) gratification from that superior attitude, we will exhibit such behaviors. After all, one way of feeling superior is seeing the other person at a "lower" position - whether in a job, or social situation or looks or education or money or whatever it is..... apne ko ooncha naheen kar sakte hein to doosron ko neecha karo... right? what to do? human failings not going away without a LOT of effort to dispense of the ego....
